Manor House |
|
| A manor house was first mentioned
in the doomsday book in 1086 as belonging to Gilbert, son of Solomon. The
De Meppershall's owned it for nearly 300 years until John married Katherine
de Broughton and their daughter Joan inherited in her mothers name. Some history of the owners is missing but in 1854 the house belonged to the trustees of Mrs. Barbara Kane and Mrs. Pen Woodburn. The present house is early 17th century and has elaborate patterning on the north and south gables. The gables and timbers were completely covered over when the house was 3 cottages, prior to restoration. In the early part of the 20th century the three cottages had rent paid to Mr. Long of Stondon. Sometime in the 1920’s or early 30’s , the house was restored to it's original state and purchased by the late Richard Haigh. In 1959, fire severely damaged one end and rather than demolish it Mr. Haigh restored the gutted end. On the outside no difference can be seen, although the rework is noticeable in the wooden hall panels and stairs. |
