Welcome to Old Road
Meadow
The
site takes it's name from the track to the north from Meppershall (Hoo Road)
which used to be referred to as the 'Old Road' as this was the route via
Hoo Farm - Carriage House - Hitchin Road into Shefford, before the existing
Shefford Road was constructed. Although recently grassed, the site
was for a long time divided into allotments for use by the villages' gardeners.
With the help of the Ivel & Ouse Countryside
Project and local residents, the Parish Council are aiming to create a place
for quiet recreation and relaxation. We hope that all residents, young
and old alike, will join us in developing, enjoying and looking after this
site.
Plans for the site include providing picnic tables
and benches, planting 'community copses', erecting more bird and bat boxes,
planting wildflower and 'sensory shrub' areas and creating a bog-garden.
Other possibilities may include planting a community orchard and installing
a sculpture or two.

Meppershall Village
Meppershall, Bedfordshire is today a large village
with approximately 2000 residents with a mixture of dwellings from old to
new. However, the settlement can be traced back to Roman times as shown
by an archaeological survey on the site of a housing development recently
constructed. There is also evidence of a possible Iron Age settlement at
the original centre of the village near where the church stands today.
